RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
