Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
